If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

Jesus draws a line between admirers and disciples, and the line is abiding. Many in the crowd believed in Him in some loose sense; Jesus tells them that the mark of a true disciple is not an initial flush of belief but continuance, "if you abide in My word." To abide is to make your home there: not to visit the Word occasionally, but to live in it, to remain, to keep coming back over months and years until it shapes the whole house of your life.

And to those who abide, He makes two promises. They will know the truth, not merely facts about God, but a deep, settled, experiential knowing. And the truth they come to know will make them free, free from deception, from the bondage of sin, from the lies we believe about God and ourselves. Freedom is the fruit of abiding; and abiding is the work of a lifetime, not a moment.

This whole half-year is an invitation to abide. Do not merely visit the Word. Move in.

Take Into The Day

Move from visiting the Word to abiding in it. Beyond today's reading, choose to keep returning to one passage all week, living in it until it begins to shape you. Abide, and watch the truth set you free.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, I do not want to merely admire You; I want to be Your disciple indeed. Help me abide in Your Word, to make my home in it and remain. Let me know the truth, and let the truth set me free. Amen.
