James gives a precise instruction for how to receive Scripture: with meekness. The verse begins, in fuller form, by telling us to lay aside "all filthiness and overflow of wickedness", to clear the soil, and then to receive the implanted word with a humble, teachable heart. The Word is pictured as a seed planted in us; but a seed only takes root in soil that is prepared and yielded, not in ground that is hard and resistant.

Meekness is the opposite of the proud, argumentative spirit that comes to the Bible looking for loopholes, or only to confirm what it already thinks. The meek reader comes to be taught, not to negotiate; to be changed, not merely to be informed. He lets the Word have the last word. And James says this humble reception is no small thing, the implanted word is "able to save your souls," to do its deep, transforming, rescuing work in us.

The same Word falls on every heart. It takes root only in the meek.

Take Into The Day

Come to the Word today with a yielded heart, not to argue or to confirm your opinions, but to be taught and changed. Where a passage challenges you, resist the urge to explain it away. Receive it with meekness.

Prayer

Lord, give me a meek and teachable heart toward Your Word. Clear away in me the pride that argues and resists. Let the implanted word take deep root and do its saving, transforming work in my soul. Amen.
