Isaiah 40:8

Isaiah sets two things side by side. On one side, all that seems strong and lovely in this world, pictured as grass and flowers, which springs up green, dazzles for a season, then withers and fades. On the other side, the word of our God, which stands forever. Everything that looks permanent to us is, in fact, grass. Only God's Word endures.
This is steadying in a world of constant change. Reputations rise and collapse, the latest certainties are overturned, what everyone believed last decade is mocked this one, and the things we built our lives around prove to be flowers that fade. If you anchor your soul to the spirit of the age, you anchor it to grass. But the person who builds on the Word of God builds on the one thing in the universe that will not wither, will not be revised, will not let them down. Every promise in it will outlast the stars.
When everything around you feels unstable, plant your feet on the Word that stands forever.
Take Into The Day
Notice today how much of what claims your trust is "grass", passing, changeable, here today. Deliberately anchor your confidence instead to one promise of God's enduring Word, and let it steady you.
Prayer
Lord, the grass withers and the flower fades, but Your Word stands forever. In a world of constant change, anchor my soul to what will not wither. Let me build my life on Your enduring Word, and not on the grass of the age. Amen.
