The psalmist reaches for the language of taste. God's words are not merely true and useful; they are sweet, sweeter than honey, which was the most delicious thing his world knew. He has moved beyond regarding Scripture as nourishing medicine to be swallowed; he savours it as a delicacy to be enjoyed. The Word has become, to him, a pleasure.

This is a stage many believers have never reached, and it is worth longing for. We can read the Bible dutifully for years before we ever taste its sweetness, before a verse so satisfies the heart that we linger over it the way you linger over something delicious, reluctant to move on. That sweetness is not reserved for the spiritual elite. It grows, ordinarily, through unhurried, repeated tasting. The person who only ever gulps Scripture down quickly never tastes it; the one who slows, chews, and savours begins to find the honey.

You will not taste sweetness by rushing. Slow down over the Word today, and let it sit on the tongue of your soul.

Take Into The Day

Refuse to rush the Word today. Take a single verse and read it slowly, several times, savouring each phrase. Linger as you would over something delicious, and ask God to let you taste its sweetness.

Prayer

Lord, let Your words be sweet to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth. Forgive me for rushing through what is meant to be savoured. Teach me to slow down and delight in Your Word, until I taste how good it truly is. Amen.
