Perfect, Reviving the Soul

The psalmist piles up praise for the Word, and the first thing he says is that it is perfect, whole, complete, without flaw, and that this perfect Word does something to us: it is "converting the soul," reviving and restoring it. The Hebrew carries the sense of bringing the soul back, refreshing what has run dry, turning a weary or wandering heart home again.

We know what it is to feel our souls run down, flat, tired, drifting. We try to revive ourselves with rest or distraction or a change of scene, and these may help the body. But the soul has its own food, and Scripture is uniquely able to restore it. A heart that has wandered finds its way back through the Word; a spirit that has gone grey is coloured again by it; the simple are made wise by it. This is not because the words are magic, but because through them the living God meets and renews the soul.

If your soul feels run down today, do not only rest your body. Bring your soul to the Word that revives it.

Take Into The Day

When you feel flat or weary today, turn first not to distraction but to a portion of Scripture. Let the perfect Word do what entertainment cannot, revive your soul and bring your heart home.

Prayer

Lord, Your Word is perfect, and it revives the soul. When I feel run down and my heart has wandered, restore me through Your Word. Refresh what has gone dry in me, and bring my wandering soul home to You. Amen.
