It Shall Not Return Empty

Isaiah 55:11
So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; it shall not return to Me void, but it shall accomplish what I please…
Tap any Scripture reference to read and listen.
God compares His Word to the rain and snow that fall from heaven and do not return there until they have watered the earth and made it bring forth. So shall My word be, it will not come back empty; it will accomplish what He pleases and prosper in the thing for which He sent it. There is a relentless effectiveness to God's Word. Once spoken, it goes to work, and it does not fail.
This is enormous encouragement for anyone who feels their time in the Word is fruitless. Some mornings the reading seems to land on dry ground; you feel nothing, remember little, and wonder whether it did any good. But the Word's working is not measured by your feelings. Like rain soaking quietly into soil, it does its work below the surface, long before the green appears. The verse you barely registered this morning may be the very thing the Spirit brings to mind next week, at the moment you need it.
So keep sowing the Word into your life, even on the dry days. It will not return empty.
Take Into The Day
On a day when the Word feels dry or fruitless, keep reading anyway, trusting that it is soaking in below the surface. Sow it without demanding to feel the harvest, and let God bring the growth in His time.
Prayer
Lord, Your Word never returns to You empty. When my time in Scripture feels dry and fruitless, help me trust that it is at work beneath the surface. Let it accomplish in me all that You please, in Your time. Amen.
