Matthew 4:4
…Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.

Jesus said these words while starving. Forty days without food, in the wilderness, with the tempter pressing Him to turn stones to bread, and at the point of greatest physical hunger, He insisted there was a deeper hunger still. Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God. He was quoting Deuteronomy, fighting temptation with Scripture, and in doing so revealing where His true sustenance lay.
We rarely doubt that the body needs daily food. We would not dream of skipping meals for a week and expecting to function. Yet we skip the soul's food for days at a time and wonder why we feel thin, brittle, easily toppled. The Word is not an optional supplement to the Christian life; it is its bread. A soul that does not feed grows faint, and a faint soul is an easy target for the tempter, as Jesus knew.
You will eat several times today without being told to. Feed your soul with the same unhurried regularity.
Take Into The Day
Treat the Word today as a meal you would not skip. Before you feed your body its first meal, feed your soul a portion of Scripture. You need both, and you will feel the lack of either.
Prayer
Lord, I would not starve my body for days; forgive me for starving my soul. Teach me to live by every word that comes from Your mouth. Be my bread today, that I may be strong and not faint when temptation comes. Amen.
