A Lamp to My Feet

Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.

Notice how modest the promise is, and how realistic. The psalmist does not say God's Word is a floodlight that lights up the whole road to the horizon. He says it is a lamp to my feet, the kind of small oil lamp a traveller carried at night, throwing just enough light for the next step. You do not get to see the whole journey. You get to see where to put your foot now.

That is usually how guidance works. We want God to illuminate the next five years; He gives us light for the next obedient step. And it is enough. A traveller who keeps taking the next lit step, all night long, arrives. The Word will not satisfy your curiosity about the future, but it will never leave you in the dark about today's step.

So begin this month by opening the Book for light, not merely information. Ask of each passage: what is the next step this lights up for me?

Take Into The Day

Open the Scriptures today not to feel informed but to find your next step. Read until one verse shows you something to do, and do that, the step the lamp has lit.

Prayer

Lord, Your Word is a lamp to my feet. I confess I often want to see the whole road; teach me to be grateful for light for the next step, and faithful to take it. Light my way today, one step at a time. Amen.
