This verse announces a radical transformation for anyone united with Christ. It's not a mere renovation of the old self, but a complete re-creation. The 'old has passed away' speaks to the former life dominated by sin, guilt, and alienation from God. In its place, 'the new has come', a new identity, a new relationship with God, new desires, and a new trajectory for life. This isn’t a process we initiate, but a divine work. Being 'in Christ' means that his death becomes our death to sin, and his resurrection becomes our resurrection to a new, abundant life. This newness is both a present reality to be lived out and a future promise of ultimate renewal.

Prayer

Almighty God, thank you for making me a new creation in Christ. Help me to daily shed the old ways and wholeheartedly embrace the new life, purpose, and identity you have given me.
