The Questions God Never Answered

Job lost almost everything a man can lose, and he did the honest thing, he asked why. Not once, but for chapter after chapter, through the tired arguments of friends whose theology was tidier than it was true. Job wanted a hearing. He wanted God to take the stand and explain Himself. It is one of the most human demands in all of Scripture, and God does not rebuke him for making it.
Then God finally speaks, out of the whirlwind. And here is the thing that ought to stop us: He does not answer a single one of Job's questions. He does not explain the suffering. Instead He asks Job around seventy questions of His own. Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Can you bind the stars? Do you give the horse its strength? ( onward). God responds to a demand for reasons with a revelation of Himself.
Insight: God is not obliged to explain Himself in order to be trusted. Sometimes the answer to "why" is simply "Who."
Job never received the reason for his pain. What he received was the Revealer. And astonishingly, it was enough. At the end he says, "now my eye sees You" (). The explanation he had begged for would have satisfied his mind for a while. Meeting God satisfied his soul for good.
There are questions I have carried for years, addressed to heaven and left unanswered. I used to think I could not rest until I understood. I have slowly learned a different rest, not the rest of having the reason, but the rest of knowing the One who holds it. When you cannot trace His hand, you can still trust His heart.
This piece touches on grief and loss. If you are walking through deep pain right now, please do not walk it alone, reach out to a pastor, a trusted friend, or your GP.
Pray this: Father, where I have demanded answers, meet me instead with Yourself. When I cannot understand, help me to trust. Let it be enough that I know the One who holds every unanswered question. Amen.
